This workshop is part of the Graphics Lab, a project aimed at picture retouching to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. This specific page is the requests page for the Photography Workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Request

This photo was taken with a lens with an extremely short focal length, so that its outer parts look all wrong (viz. the "leaning tower" which in reality stands straight). Can anybody straighten it out? --Schlosser67 (talk) 06:11, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

@Frze, PawełMM, Danmichaelo: I can't rotate many of these files with CropTool for the following reasons:

• It doesn't support TIFF, PDF, or video formats.
• 1 degree is sometimes too much of an adjustment, and digital portions of degrees are deemed invalid.
• Its crop + rotation appears to be buggy sometimes, cropping too little from the top.
• I sometimes miss a pixel or two of white borders on the top & left due to no shadow there on the preview.

With a 100Mb file limit, several of the current images are too big to be uploaded from user's computers, so that's a big issue. I even tried a 90Mb file and the upload errored out on me 3 times so I just gave up. Ww2censor (talk) 10:22, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

I tried holding my phone still to the best of my ability but there's still some motion blur. I uploaded the original. I used HDR feature. Could somebody please help me fix this? There's no other image of a TMS setup and it could be used if it looked sharper and cropped (and foreground chair removed if possible). Also needs orientation fixed. Re-shoot. You have so much against you from improving this image. Assume that you know the owner of the TMS treatment centre. S/he shouldn’t have any objection to you having another try. On Auto (on your iPhone) under artificial light the shutter speed according to the EXIF data file shows an exposure time 1/20 sec... which is far to slow for a hand-held shot. So there is no way, to correct this type of blurring. Suggestion: For a second successful shot: Borrow a friend’s or neighbour's digital camera and trypod, then have them set it to 400 or even 800 ISO film speed. Have them set it too, not to Auto but 'Portrait' (and auto white balance and compulsory flash suppression of course). Then whilst you are still there, turn the ring to 'close up' (it has the symbol of a flower). Then take some photos of the TMS unit itself (the thing on the quadrupedal casters and also the driving modules connected by the high current blue cable). Upload again to the same file name as to over-write the original image. The owner can also provide name of the equipment s/he uses. This too can be added to the description to make the image more informative. P.S. We do not allow advertising nor promotion in any way here on Wiki projects but it think that name of this hospital could be mentioned in the description itself. For heaven’s sake though, if you do a re-shoot, get those two chairs, door handle and the clutter removed. Show them your original photo and they will quickly get the point that in a photo this looks bad and shows that you are considerate and worthy of a being granted an opportunity to create a good (if not great) publishable image. Finally. You will need a digital that has a lens that can go down to very wide angle. Try it out first to see if you can get the room in. My gut reaction is that your iPhone over did it. You don't need to include the white-board and door handle. View this as not a 'fail' but learning experience. P.g.champion (talk) 18:01, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

I don't have access to another camera or a tripod and I may not get a chance to retake. I think the problem is a combination of shake and that HDR was used and it tried to put together 3 images. It had the option to keep the original image but I had it turned off. Shake and blur is a problem with most of my pictures because I have tremors. I'm going to look into getting a DSLR with optical stabilization. --Technophant (talk) 13:03, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

I'd highly recommend a tripod. And if the DSLR you get uses a mirror that flips up, set the camera to have a 1-second delay between that the shutter opening for shots that don't require a fast shutter speed. PumpkinSky talk 13:10, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

@Technophant: Just a another tip if you have no alternate tools. Get rid of the chairs and use us one a makeshift tripod. You can also crop in tighter. Gently rest your iPhone along the back of one of the chairs, or use a table or flat top stool where you can actually set the iPhone down properly, raising it on a sturdy box if necessary, maybe you have to kneel on the floor, then when you are ready to take the shot, hold your breath momentarily and don't prod or poke the button on the touch screen just gently touch it. If you can't to it due to your tremors, ask someone else to take it after you have set it up and don't forget you can always move some of the things closer to one another and put them back afterwards. Make sure to check the photo before you leave the location. Maybe even taking a few versions. You can try this technique at home and see the results before going back there.  Done, @Wehwalt: downloaded a fresh tif version that was much higher resolution, adjusted the levels considerable to brighten the mid tones and the white point. Then uploaded that as a new tif version, also converted into jpg format and overwrote the original low resolution image. See above.
