Commons:Picture of the Year

The Commons Picture of the Year is a competition that was first run in 2006. It aims to identify the best freely licensed images from those that during the year have been awarded Featured picture status.

In 2009 there were 890 images promoted to Featured Picture. During the first round of the competition, participants could vote for as many images as they liked. The category winners and top 10 over all images proceeded to the final. In the final, 742 cast a vote, of which 62 were cast on the winner Sikh pilgrim at the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) in India. See more results of the first round and final.

In 2008 there were 501 images promoted to Featured Picture. During the first round of the competition, participants could vote for as many images they liked, resulting in 27647 votes by 994 people. The top 51 images proceeded to the final. In the final, 712 cast a vote, of which 74 were cast on the winner Horses on Bianditz mountain, in Navarra, Spain. In 2007 there were 514 images promoted to Featured Picture. During the first round of the competition, participants could vote for as many images they liked, resulting in 31806 votes by 665 people. The top 28 images proceeded to the final. In the final, 919 cast a vote, of which 84 were cast on the winner Broadway Tower in Cotswolds, England. See more results of the first round and final.

390 and then 658 Wikimedians voted in 2 rounds for 321 images that were successfully nominated as Featured pictures during 2006. Voting was conducted on-wiki during the first two weeks of February 2007. Only one category was voted on: the Picture of the Year.
